Why are collective investment trusts (CITs) an attractive investment vehicle for your clients?

Including CITs in a portfolio, may be appropriate for retirement plan clients who are looking for fee flexibility, less operational responsibilities, and overall lower expenses.

Did you know?
  1. CITs are institutional products managed by a bank or trust company and sold exclusively to plan sponsors and fiduciaries

  2. CITs are specifically managed to comply with ERISA fiduciary standards and are subject to various federal and state regulations, including oversight by the Department of Labor (DOL) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)

  3. CITs are available only as retirement plan vehicles

  4. CITs are comingled assets into one private investment portfolio with a specific strategy

Expense Structure

Because CITs are exempt from registration under the Securities Exchange Act of 1394, they can avoid many of the expenses borne by mutual funds, such as SEC registration and maintenance of an independent board of directors. CITs also may offer fee classes that provide payments to plan service providers such as recordkeepers.

Fee flexibility

Fees and expenses can vary depending on the retirement plan. CIT providers can offer lower fee classes to plan sponsor clients of advisors that hold broader relationships with the CIT fund manager.
